The nearest large chain grocery stores are 40 minutes away. The nearest shopping mall is an hour away. Good movie theaters, opera, cultural events are 1 to 1 1/2 hours drive away. Mother Nature is one foot from your door. If you are scared of spiders or rats you will have problems. We also frequently see: raccoons, skunks, possums, and coyotes. A bear has been seen in recent months. We can get snowed in during Winter storms. Most of us heat with wood. Meaning we have to haul in wood for the fireplace. Medical offices are in Ramona, Poway, El Cajon. Nearest hospital is 1 hour away. We have life flight helicopters that are called in case of an emergency. We have a large number of persons who are EMT (emergancy medical technicians). With winds from any direction and multipule ecosystems, people with allergies never have a time without problems. Water is not cheap. We are living in a desert and must pay for the water. Housing is not cheap. Many people want to retire to Julian making supply short of demand. Most houses are on a mountain or hill. There are very few level lots. Country people don't visit between their houses much. They socialize by joining a club or organization. That's why my list of Clubs is on the Moving page. If you don't join an organization they will leave you alone, because they just figure you don't want to be bothered with people and that's fine. Rumors and gossip move pretty good around town. We even have a few people who purposely make up rumors just to see what will happen. Of course we are Californians so we will probably laugh at any gossip we hear. Don't come up here with the attitude that you can help these small town people with something. We are very well educated. We also have world famous artists. Don't think we are isolated, uneducated, and unsophisticated. Many are world travelers that choose to live in Julian. The right phrase is: "How can I help?" not: "Here's is how you should be doing it?" Not everyone is cut out to live in a small town. Be aware if you or your spouse is a city person. |
