Bees, Europeon Honey We do have a small honey bee industry in Julian. Go to the Julian Cider on Main Street of buy the best honey. Meyers Orchard also has honey when they are opened for apple season. Bees, Killer read Bee Alert: Africanized Honey Bee Bitting Flies Usually appear for about two weeks in June. They look like large house flies but they bit. They are slow movers so you have the satisfaction of being able to swat them when they bit you. Bumblebee They looked like a bee that has survived an atomic blast. They are about five times larger than a honey bee. They have black and yellow strips but they appear furry. They can sting but they are not hive dwellers so they travel alone. Cicadas: Also known as seven year and fifteen year locust. These grasshopper size insects are black with red eyes. They don't have the long legs of grasshoppers or locust. The larva drop from bush limbs and live in the soil for many years. Some have been studied to live in soil for seven year. Some for fifteen years. Then in late spring for about two weeks, they come out and perch in the bushes making a rachet to attract and mate. They mate and lay their eggs in a stratch in the bush branch and die. This year 1998 I only saw one cicadas. Evidentally they don't like El Nino Years. (Usually there are hundreds in a bush.) Deer Flies Green colored fly like insects. They bite for about two weeks in June. Yellow jackets A wasp. They are longer than a bee and have black and lemon yellow stripes on body. They can sting multiple times but only sting when made angry. They are attracted to meat. |
