Julian is a small mountain
community in Southern California. The town itself has a population
of about 500. If you include the surrounding population it can
get up to 3000 persons. We had a gold rush to this area starting
1869. Because of isolation and protection we retain the architecture
of a real western pioneer town. Because of our high altitude
and cold winters we can grow apples. In the rest of Southern
California it is too warm for apples. All the apples we grow
and then some get made into apple pie or cider or are sold to
the tourist whole. In October we make and sell 10,000 apple pies
a week. That's because all of San Diego and half of Los Angeles
come to Julian for the Apple pie and Fall colors in October.
Tourism is our biggest industry. Second is cattle raising. Most
of our area is mixed Oak and Pine Forest. However Julian is in
a truly unique position. Within a 15 mile radius you can go from
High Altitude (6000 ft) to Desert (1000 ft) and everywhere in
between. |
