Julian is in a very geologically active area. We have the Elsinore Fault that runs down Banner Grade. Earthquakes can also be felt from San Diego, Los Angeles, and the Desert areas. Gold was discovered here in 1869. We also are rich in many different gems including tourmaline, kunzite, quartz crystals. The gold mines in Julian and Banner were all broken up because of fault lines. A vein of ore would be running along good and just come to a stop. The only mine that didn't do this is Stonewall Mine that is South of Lake Cuyamaca. Some mines are still being worked but not for large amounts. An interesting book on Gem mining around the turn of the last century is "Exploring and Mining Gems and Gold in the West" by Fred Rynerson, Naturegraph Publishers, Happy Camp, CA, 1967. Another interesting book on San Diego County: "Geology of San Diego County, Legacy of the Land," by Frederick W. Bergen, Harold J. Clifford, Steven G. Spear, published by Sunbelt Publications, San Diego, California |
